Friday, May 11, 2012, Morrisville, NC:  Quick show of hands:  How many of you have ever been to the ASE Headquarters in Morrisville, NC?  Not so many out there?  I’d guess that less than 1% of our membership has ever been to the nerve center of ASE’s national and world-wide operations.  Well, fasten your seat belts, because you’re about to go on a virtual tour of ASE’s headquarters, courtesy of the Presidential Blog.  I’ve tried to get down to HQ every couple of months throughout my presidency, as I’ve found it very helpful in getting a full update on all our myriad activities and a great way to connect with all the wonderful staff who do so much of ASE’s important work.  There was a second reason for my visit, and that was to see my daughter Beth graduate from the Duke Physician Assistant program.  She started two years ago (as I began my president-elect year), so it’s been a perfect excuse to combine visits. Saturday, May 4, 2012, New York City: Hi, All. It’s your President again, this time reporting from New York City, where I’ve just finished speaking at Becky Hahn’s 14th annual echo conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. This is always one of my favorite conferences to attend, giving me a chance to reconnect with the faculty, including ASE Past-Presidents Linda Gillam and Mike Picard (not to mention ASE Treasurer and future President Neil Weissman). It’s also in New York, home to some of the most interesting restaurants in the country! Becky is one of the hardest working volunteers in ASE. She’s just putting the finishing touches on a new online ASCeXAM Simulation exam. Through Becky’s leadership (i.e. beating the committee like rented mules…), this project has been authored in record time, starting last summer and hopefully out by our Scientific Sessions (you’re coming, right????). Saturday, April 28, 2012, Toronto, Canada (with a postscript from Cleveland): Yesterday was a bright but chilly day in Toronto, a chance to catch a bit of the meeting and get a little work done (like yesterday’s blog post: these things don’t write themselves, y’know!). Last night was the annual Board of Director’s meeting, and I was invited to discuss items of mutual interest and enjoy some outstanding Canadian cuisine at Bymark Restaurant (apologies: no food pics!). Among the items we discussed was CSE involvement in the next World Echo Summit in Delhi, October 25-27, 2013, which was enthusiastically received. We also discussed several ways to increase Canadian attendance at and CSE involvement in Echo Hawaii. And really, what sane person wouldn’t choose Hawaii over Saskatoon in January! [more]

Friday, April 27, 2012, Toronto, Canada:  Greetings all.  Well, after one whole day in Cleveland (with a bunch of echoes and patients), I’m off again, this time to represent the ASE at the Canadian Society of Echocardiography in Toronto.  Both as a country and a Society, the Canadians are just about our best friends in the world, and it’s good to be up here.  Indeed, it hasn’t been so long since ASE had a Canadian President, Harry Rakowski.  I’m especially glad that my wife Yngvil has been able to come along this time.  It’s always good to have the “First Lady” with me on diplomatic missions, even if she’s going to buried in her work most of the time.
